I think the two things that have helped me make better music the most is focusing on rhythms and having a decent understanding of how intervals relate to each other (Circle of Fifths).

From my understanding funk is major/upbeat music with a heavy focus on rhythm, and rhythm and blues is minor/sadder songs; they both share the blues scale and rhythm is the name of the game.
The melodies in funk are more percussive too, and RnB uses big 7th and 9th chords...

I think the only purpose of music theory should be to help you make the type of music that you want directly, same with sound design. Think about what it should be before you make it (beatboxing a groove and singing a melody helps) Being formulaic can be fun!
